President poll: Sangma quits party, BJP dithers on support, Nitish refuses

New Delhi: PA Sangma, stable in running for President of India, has resigned from the party he co-founded several years ago to Sharad Pawar. Mr Sangma said he had no choice but to stop the nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is a member of the ruling coalition, the UPA.
Party chief Sharad Pawar has accepted his resignation.
Mr Sangma was urged by his party to withdraw from the race. NCP has committed its support to the UPA candidate, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Until this morning, the party was with the hope of persuading him to withdraw from the contest.The main opposition party, the BJP, is considering whether to throw its weight behind Mr Sangma. Nitish Kumar, a key ally of the BJP, did not want to challenge Mr. Mukherjee for President. According to sources, the Bihar Chief Minister said the BJP that he would not back Mr Sangma. Sources also say that JD (U) president Sharad Yadav has communicated this to the BJP leadership - they want the BJP to make a formal announcement.
Another partner, the Shiv Sena, has announced that it would vote for Mr. Mukherjee as the BJP-led coalition, the NDA, has failed to find a worthy candidate.
Lauding APJ Abdul Kalam for withdrawing from the Presidential race, Shiv Sena today said in an editorial in his magazine like "conscience" of another presidential hopeful, the PA Sangma, also startle.
Senior BJP leader LK Advani will meet at the house this evening. Now that Mr Sangma is no longer a member of a party associated with the Congress, BJP will find it easier to back him. Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy, Mr. Sagma met this afternoon on behalf of the NDA.
Mr Sangma said that he was not contradicting the taxi of his party because he is a representative of the tribal group, not the NCP. He has the backing of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa and Navin Patnaik chief minister Odisha. The BJP is keen to join this group. Mathematics is not in favor of Mr Sangma. But the BJP is looking at the competition through the prism of general elections in 2014. Want to put up a candidate against UPA to prove to voters that it is a functional opposition. Party wants to move closer to the party led by Mr. Jayalalithaa and Mr. Patnaik.
Mr Sangma odds are heavily influenced by the Left, which meets tomorrow to decide who to back in the Presidential election. Sources say Left parties not to support a candidate propped up by the BJP.
